Abstract

Issues related to female vaginal bleeding, including menstruation (ay), postnatal bleeding (nifas), and irregular bleeding (istiāah), hold significant importance in Islamic jurisprudence as they directly affect a Muslim woman’s religious obligations, such as prayer, fasting, and acts of worship. Despite having a generally high level of basic knowledge regarding female vaginal bleeding, many Muslim women still face challenges in applying this knowledge to real-life situations, especially when encountering irregular menstrual patterns. This study examines Muslim women’s levels of knowledge, situational understanding, and self-confidence regarding issues of female vaginal bleeding and evaluates the need for developing a menstrual bleeding identification calendar application grounded in the Shafi‘i school of Islamic jurisprudence among female university students in Malaysia. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 411 Muslim female respondents and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The results indicate that respondents demonstrate a high level of general knowledge of female bleeding. However, their situational understanding and self-confidence are comparatively moderate, particularly when managing irregular menstrual patterns and differentiating types of bleeding with religious implications. Although more than half of the respondents reported prior use of menstrual tracking applications, most were relatively recent users, and existing applications were found to lack sufficient integration of Islamic legal guidance. Furthermore, respondents exhibited a high degree of readiness and trust in mobile applications informed by Islamic jurisprudential principles, with strong expectations for features such as automated tracking, Shafi‘i-based legal guidance, consultation support, and user-centred design. Overall, the findings underscore the need for a jurisprudentially grounded digital tool that integrates Islamic legal reasoning with menstrual tracking functionality, serving both as practical religious support and as an educational resource for contemporary Muslim women, in alignment with the objectives of Maqasid al-Shariah, particularly the preservation of religion (if al-dīn).
